Hauser & Wirth Zürich

Hauser & Wirth is an international gallery, founded in Zurich in 1992 by Iwan and Manuela Wirth and Ursula Hauser. In 1996 the Zurich gallery opened in the former Löwenbräu brewery building, along with other contemporary art galleries, the Kunsthalle Zürich, and the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst Zürich. Over the past eight years Hauser & Wirth has been a major presence in the London art scene: the gallery now has three spaces in the city – Hauser & Wirth Piccadilly, Hauser & Wirth Old Bond Street and Hauser & Wirth Savile Row. In addition to these permanent spaces, Hauser & Wirth also opened an enormous temporary project space in London’s East End in 2005. Hauser & Wirth Coppermill showed exhibitions by Martin Kippenberger and Dieter and Björn Roth, Christoph Büchel and Martin Creed before it closed in July 2007.
In September 2009, Hauser & Wirth opened its long-awaited New York gallery in the Upper East Side of Manhattan with ‘Allan Kaprow. Yard’. Also in September, the gallery inaugurated its outdoor sculpture programme in Southwood Garden, St James’s Church, London, with an exhibition of sculptures by Josephsohn.
In September 2010, Hauser & Wirth re-located their Zurich space to a new temporary location at Hubertus Exhibitions while the Löwenbräu building undergoes major renovation. One month later in October 2010, Hauser & Wirth opened a new London space at 23 Savile Row. Offering 15,000 square feet of exhibition space, the gallery provides an outstanding setting for larger exhibitions and more expansive installations. In addition, 7,000 square feet of the building's first floor has been developed for an extensive library, archive and new offices. The new gallery space was inaugurated by the critically acclaimed exhibition, ‘Louise Bourgeois: The Fabric Works’, curated by Germano Celant.
In addition to its status as a major international gallery, Hauser & Wirth has also partnered with major publishing companies to produce such noteworthy publications as the stunning Louise Bourgeois artist book, ‘Nothing to Remember’ (2009) and ‘Maria Lassnig. The Pen is the Sister of the Brush’ (2009). Recent and forthcoming publications include Roni Horn’s ‘aka’, Paul McCarthy’s ‘TIDE BOX TIDE BOOK’, ‘Subodh Gupta – Common Man’, and ‘Alex Van Gelder – Louise Bourgeois ARMED FORCES’.
